Hello SWFEC followers!  Welcome to SWFEC’s Forum. On most days we will post a thread titled “OPEN DISCUSSION” on this forum. This thread is for viewers to share their thoughts, questions, scaps, and observations. Our SWFEC group will also try to answer any questions you might have.

Threads that begin with “SWFEC Season 11” are NEST OBSERVATIONS posted only by members of the SWFEC group. Be sure to check the replies for updates and photos for that day. In order to keep the new observations in order (in the replies) PLEASE DON’T REPLY to the posts in the Nest Observation threads. Posts other than SWFEC’s group members will be deleted.

Instead, viewers are asked to use the “OPEN DISCUSSION” thread for posting. We also ask that you not start new topic threads – only post on the “Open Discussion” thread that is started. New topics not started by SWFEC moderators will be deleted. Thank you for your help as we adjust to this new way of posting observations. Thank you!

Over the past months we have watch Harriet and M15 build a new nest after the entire nest was destroyed by Hurricane Ian. Fortunately, two of the cameras were not damaged and the camera owners, the Pritchetts, were able to get the nest and pond cameras back online – in time for egg-laying.

The pair constructed the nest with time to spare and on November 29, 2022 at 6:09pm Harriet laid the first egg of Season 11; followed by the second egg on December 2, 2022 at 8:09pm. The expected hatch time for Egg #1 is around January 3-4, 2023.

Over the months, both Harriet and M15 have shared incubation duties and protected their nest. Food has been brought to the nest a number of times. As in years past, the Great Horned Owls are nesting in the west pasture and are protecting their territory as well    sometimes knocking the eagles off their perches during the evening hours.

Tuesday, December 20, 2022 – the afternoon brings rain to the nest area. Harriet incubates until 10:07am. M15 takes over. Harriet flies off and enjoys a few hours away from the nest. She returns and begins incubating at 1:04pm.  Both adults rarely gave any views of the eggs (keeping them dry). M15 returns to upper branch at 4:59pm.

8:46pm M15 to nest; finally gets Harriet to move off eggs. M15 rolls eggs and begins incubating at 8:51pm. Harriet returns to nest at 9:25pm; M15 tries to remain incubating, but Harriet eventually convinces him to leave (M15 to attic) and resumes incubating at 9:36pm. The day comes to an end.
