Lady Hawk - Harriet and M15 have settled into a routine of incubating & rolling the eggs with multiple shift changes between them throughout the day. They both take their responsibilities seriously and with purpose. A successful nest requires both parents actively cooperating and taking turns on the eggs. ?? M is incubating and gets up to roll the eggs & aerate around them. Aerating the nest combined with incubation helps maintain the egg temperature. M lays back down and Harriet flies in with some long grasses. She puts them on M's back - her nifty little trick to get him up so she can incubate. M heads to the outer attic and will fly off southwest. Harriet will get up every half hour to an hour to roll the eggs and reposition herself on them. Precious cargo indeed! Why roll the eggs? The adults roll the eggs in order to keep the temperature even throughout the egg and to prevent the embryo from adhering to one side of the egg. Scientists also believe that rotating ensures the embryo get enough albumin (mixture of water & protein making up the egg white which provides nutrients. Too little albumen can lead to an underdeveloped chick. Thank you for watching!
