Weekly Nest Notes: Standing Taller and Stronger

E17 and E18 are approaching six weeks of age and are gaining strength and balance to stand upright, walk a few steps, and flap beautiful wings around the nest. Their stature is impressive, and their sleek dark juvenile feathers are emerging. E18 is catching up to E17 in size and appearance. They practice foraging, picking at items in the nest, and finding food morsels. As they gain more coordination of their feet and beaks, they will start self-feeding. They are quick learners, tracking Harriet and M15 as they arrive, prepare and serve the meals. E17 is the dominant nest-mate, but E18 is more courageous and cunning in getting to the food.

E17 and E18 are becoming more independent, as Mom and Dad give them more space and freedom in the nest. They are keenly aware and watch all the activity in and around the nest tree. There are naturally curious about the world beyond the nest, and they move daringly close to the edge. Harriet and M15 arrive throughout the day to offer them some shade in the hot sun. They have been spending most of the overnight hours sleeping in the nest while Mom and Dad stand guard above. 

 
Harriet and M15’s effort and guidance impart the ways of Eagle life to E17 and E18 that will carry them along their journey. They are working on skills and engaging instincts that are essential for their future survival. The coming weeks will be exciting times as E17 and E18 stand tall and strong as confident and brave young Eagles.
