SWFEC Nest Notes: e24 and e25, five weeks old and flourishing

E24 and E25 are flourishing, as they are now five weeks old. They begin to present as beautiful young raptors with sleek dark feathers starting to cover their growing bodies. This stage of their progress has them coordinating all the body parts to work together. They preen and care for their feathers, gain more control of their big feet, stand upright with better balance, and flap their sprawling wings. They are practicing for eventual self-feeding.

E24 and E25 are feisty with short bouts of “don’t touch me” and “this is mine” sparring. Behaviors that are expected between siblings to establish their pecking order. Moments later, they are snuggling together. Curiosity and instinct lead them to forage in the nest, look for morsels, and pick up nesting and sticks to carry. Keep-away and mantling to secure their finds will be a common occurrence.

M15 and F23 work continuously to ensure that E24 and E25 have been well-fed through their fastest growth period. Their menu included a wide variety of fish, meaty bones, and various road-kill items. Watching the food preparations teaches E24 and E25 how all opportunities can result in a meal. Dad and Momma keep the area secure from all threats. E24 and E25 know the warning vocals and take heed.
