The day began with E4 flying in the morning darkness from the nest tree to the pond tree where Mom and Dad were perched. These days are filled with many “firsts” accomplished by E4 as the learning process continues. E4 is passing the lessons with “flying colors” so to speak. Harriet was off toward the river and E4 remained to play in the pond tree where Ozzie was still perched. E4 took flight toward the river to follow Ozzie. E4 returned a while later landed in the nest for a minute then followed Harriet back out toward the river. Shortly after Harriet returned from the direction of the river she was chased by the crows from her perch in the west pasture tree line to one of the front trees near the nest.
In a burst of exciting flights, Ozzie returned from the south with E4 and Harriet following on his tail. While flying high and diving low to the ground and from tree to tree all around the pasture, E4 was in pursuit of Ozzie with the prey. Ozzie finally landed on the bank of the pond with his catch which E4 still on the chase, stole and began to de-feather. E4 cautiously ate on the ground until the horses approached. E4 then took the prey to the pond tree to eat. At one point E4 dropped the prey from the tree but soon went to the ground to find and finish off the prize meal. These behaviors of chasing, stealing and finding the food will help ensure E4’s survival in the wild.
