Nature’s Way – Weekly Nest Notes

Harriet and M15 engaged all their instinctual abilities as they prepared for eggs and eaglets. With all of the parts in place Harriet laid Egg 1 at 5:03 p.m. on November 22, 2016. M15 greeted his precious egg with great interest looking under Harriet and pulling the Egg toward him. Mom took the overnight incubating duties. Dad eagerly took his turn at incubation early the next morning. Harriet was off to stretch and enjoy a leisure day after labor and delivery. M15 brought fish to his Lady and she accepted with vocal approval. M15 brought more sticks and soft nest material. Their bond has grown stronger and the rewards of their efforts are being realized.

Mom and Dad appeared to be off of Egg 1 quite a bit but all looked to be alright since the weather was warm. Delay of incubation occurs until all of the eggs are laid. Harriet’s clutch has usually been 2 eggs over the past years. Dad would cover Egg 1 with nest material and Mom would bring it back into view to incubate. It seemed that Dad was protecting Egg 1 and he would continue to cover it up digging deep into the nest bowl.

Mom was nearing the delivery of her second egg and there was no sighting of Egg 1 since Dad had it well buried. Mom checked around in the soft grasses, laid in the nest and appeared to quietly deliver Egg 2. It was not known if indeed this egg was Egg 2 or if Egg 1 had reemerged. Thoughts were that the actions of Dad covering Egg 1 may have meant it was somehow compromised and he was burying it intentionally. Egg 2 was laid at 6:13 p.m. on November 25, 2016. As Mom and Dad continually incubate Egg 2, aerating the nest bowl has partially uncovered Egg 1.There is no way of knowing the fate of Egg 1 for sure.

Viewing nature can be interesting, joyful and heart wrenching at the same time. There are logical reasons for the workings of it all. Nature has no time to wallow in loss and sorrow. Focus is now toward rejoicing in the present. All hope is to welcome new life into the pasture. Nest Notes by dadsjazz
