Weekly Nest Notes: Fearless Fliers

The sun barely rises as E12 and E13 are bounding with energy to start their day of fresh discoveries.  It has been only few weeks since fledging, taking their first flights away from the nest tree, and they have become accomplished, skillful, and fearless fliers in the skies. Their senses of wonder and exploration have taken them to new adventures. They maneuver through the pasture crisscrossing in mid-air, soaring the skies and rocketing from one place to another with precision and confidence. They give chase to Mom and Dad, or anything that moves or flies. E12 and E13 practiced hunting swooping and circling around the pond after the egrets and ducks. E12 scopes out the ground picking up sticks and other treasures. E12 grabbed tree branches on the fly taking after Mom’s example. E13 watches from the pond snag as E12 visits the pond to take a drink, soak and bathe all while keeping an eye on the visitors there. They follow each other seeming to be inseparable one moment and far apart at other times. E12 has been observed perched in a tree at Yonder Pond traveling farther from the nest tree and pasture.

Harriet and M15 still provided food and protection for their adventurous E’s. Mom and Dad roosted for a few nights in the nest tree and on the attic branch possibly showing a united effort to the pesky Owls or any other intruders. M15 delivered meals to the ground in various places and to tree branches showing more opportunities to eat away from the nest. Hunting for their own food is the most critical skill they will develop. E13 has great stealing abilities versus E12’s quickness in getting to the food. E12 stepped up their game bringing prey to the nest and even sharing it with E13.

M15 has outdone himself as provider and teacher to his eager E’s. Harriet’s days seem more relaxed as her grown babies become more independent. Mom and Dad’s roles will be diminishing as E12 and E13 break through more milestones engaging instincts and lessons learned.  Their advancement has been extraordinary as they continue their passage to life as majestic Eagles.
