Weekly Nest Notes: The Great Defenders

E12 and E13 have been observing Mom and Dad over the months taking in all the valuable lessons and putting them into play. Mom reminded E13 to not give up on the food when she went to the nest to finish a meal that Dad delivered. E13 immediately returned to nest to engage in a tug-0-war winning the prize. Dad then delivered a fish and E13 mantled and claimed that too. E13 has perfected the art of the steal and did an excellent job of protecting and defending all the food.  Mom stayed a while to provide some competition. There were several more tugging battles back and forth but E13 eventually shared with Mom.

The Eagle Family seems to be enjoying their pond more this year than in years past allowing great views of their interactions. Harriet caught a few fish as both E’s watched and flew in for the steal. Harriet relishes in her baths and M15 has been observed more often at the pond bathing. E13 finally took the plunge and splashed around in the water. E12 has taken a special interest with the pond and all activities there. E12 had a real swim after landing in the water trying to steal a fish from Mom. Both E’s have swooped on and chased the ducks, herons and other birds around the pond. E12 perches on the fence post and pylons patrolling the banks and the trees, stalking and studying the squirrels.  E12 knows what food and prey are and practices the hunt, getting a talon on one of the ducks during a sweep of the pond. E12 performed an impressive hover checking out the turtle just at the pond edge. E12 charged at and chased E13 away from the pond bank while defending the area as their own.

The season for migration has begun and  Eagles of all ages were observed visiting the territory over the week. Harriet and M15 have kept the majority of the uninvited guests at bay escorting them away. A beautiful sub-adult Eagle perched in the nest tree then flew to a snag tree at the pond.  E12 wanting no part of this perceived intruder, gave chase around the pasture and out of sight to defend the territory. Harriet seemed to tolerate another sub-adult Eagle who landed in a front pine snag, stayed for a while and flew off toward the North. Time is nearing when E12 and E13 will heed the call to venture out on their own to experience the world. They are intelligent and skilled and will have many successes navigating the skies on their voyages to becoming regal Eagles. Nest Notes by dadsjazz.
