Weekly Nest Notes: Growing & Learning (Jan. 7, 2020)

Harriet and M15 have watched E14 growing before their eyes over the last 2 weeks.  At hatching time E14 weighed about 2 ounces and was 3 inches tall. Now approaching 3 weeks, E14 is about a foot tall and weighs close to 3 pounds. E14 is mostly covered with darker grey thermal down feathers to help regulate their body temperature. E14 is alert and strong in between long naps that produce more growing spurts. Feet are bumping out quickly and little wings are developing pin feathers. E14 preens those sprouting feathers just like Mom and Dad. In record time E14 will be close to adult size as they continue peeping, eating, sleeping and growing.

Harriet and M15 provide for all of E14’s needs and allow time for exploration around the nest. E14 made the big climb out of the nest bowl and ventured to the nest rails.  Glimpses of E14 were seen above the rails as they gained the courage to peek out to a new view of the world beyond the nest. E14 builds  muscles scooting around the nest and exercises growing wings. Nest material and sticks catch E14’s attention as they grab at and move items just like Mom and Dad. E14 observes Mom and Dad and heeds their calls knowing when to lay low as the alert is sounded and when to step up  for meal delivery. E14 is also learning that food may not always be available and eats eagerly to fullness.

Harriet and M15 strive for success in the rearing of their offspring to adulthood. The nonviable Egg 2 is still in the nest and seems to be a kind of companion to E14, but a conclusion will eventually come as to its fate.  The next few months will see E14 grow at a rapid pace, gain valuable knowledge, and engage instincts which will prove crucial in their survival.  Harriet and M15’s  interactions imprint upon E14 and present critical on-going lessons of Eagle life.
