Weekly Nest Notes: Welcome Special Deliveries!

Harriet and M15 focused on their original nest after building an alternate nest in a West pasture snag tree. They seemed to have a sense of urgency to get the “nestorations” complete in anticipation of eggs.  M15 brought in talons full of soft grasses for the nest bowl and reinforced the nest rails. Harriet adorned the nest with a fresh pine bough and an air plant. They put the finishing touches on the nest just in time to welcome their special deliveries, Egg 1 and Egg 2.

Harriet and M15 stayed close to the nest tree. M15 brought a rabbit and fish to the nest, but Harriet didn’t seem interested. She stood in the nest and looked like she would lay her Egg. Harriet got up with no egg in view and flew to the pond for a drink. She has fooled everyone before. Harriet returned to the nest, got very serious, and circled restlessly in the nest bowl. Lo and behold, she laid Egg 1 at 4:58 pm on 12-16-2020. M15 returned to the nest for his first look at the precious Egg. Harriet began her night shift incubating.

Harriet and M15 quickly adapt to their well timed exchanges on nest duty. Since eggs are usually laid 2-4 days apart, they practiced delayed incubation allowing the eggs to hatch closer together. Harriet took the overnight hours while M15 perched above the nest to watch over his Family. In typical Harriet fashion, she lay in the nest incubating Egg 1 and, after a few subtle moves, she laid Egg 2 at 4:45 pm on 12-19-2020. She settled in to incubate both of her perfect Eggs after allowing a glimpse. Harriet rested well with M15 guarding them from above. The journey begins as Mom and Dad care for their treasured Eggs with the hopes of presenting new life in the pasture.  Nest Notes by dadsjazz
