SWFEC Nest Notes: Extraordinary Young Eagles

image

E19 and E20 are turning eight weeks old and are on extraordinary paths in their young lives. They have surpassed many milestones along the way and are refining their skills. Their presence in the nest is stunning as they are nearly adult size with expansive wings reaching the far edges of the nest. E19 and E20 catch the air, flap away, feel the wind. They are gaining strength and height and will soon be hovering above the nest to prepare for future flights.

E19 and E20 have eaten a large variety of meals that included fish, fowl, and many types of prey. Harriet tried hard to bring a heavy food item in from the pasture. E19 and E20 watch her struggle with it and the vultures surrounding her. Harriet ate some and dragged the rest to the cover of trees. M15 delivered a fish and was mobbed by E20 with an enormous mantle, covering and grabbing the food. M15 quickly flew off,  safeguarding his toes and avoiding getting knocked off the nest. E19 looked around as if surprised by the action of E20 keeping and eating the whole fish. Food drops will happen more often now that E19 and E20 lie in wait of the delivery and compete to get to it first. E20 is more assertive at mealtime and even pecks at E19 to stay away from their catch. E19 and E20 are better at self-feeding, stealing, and keep-away, which are good survival techniques.

Harriet and M15 seem to have more free time now that their almost grown babies have the confidence to be left alone. They are never far away and keep their sights always on their territory. Harriet enjoyed a long leisure bath in the pond and spent a while preening and drying off in the breeze. M15 takes time for himself and hunting excursions returning with his interesting catches for the Family. Harriet and M15 are succeeding in the ultimate goal of rearing self-sufficient and thriving young Eagles. Nest Notes by dadsjazz
