E10 and E11 are checking off more milestones in their young lives as they change seemingly minute by minute.   Their contour, wing and tail feathers are beginning to emerge and they spend a lot of time preening them. Remnants of light gray downy fluff gives them a comical appearance but it will be replaced with beautiful juvenile feathers.  Spectacular wings are unfolding and  E10 and E11 begin to get the feel of the breezes as they flap away. Balance and leg strength grows and they will soon be walking… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: Feathers, Wings & More!

Weekly Nest Notes- “Here We Grow!”

E10 and E11 are growing at a rapid pace and if you blinked you missed something. Eagle chicks grow at a faster rate than any other bird in North America. At hatch E10 and E11 were approximately 3 inches tall and weigh about 2 ounces. By week 3 they are about 8-10 inches tall and weigh approximately 2.5 lbs. Harriet and M15 stuffed the growing babies to the brim with nutritious courses of fish, foul, mammals and a variety of unidentified food objects. Weekly Nest Notes- Hatch Edition- The Continuing Journey

Late summer of 2017 began with preparations for the upcoming nesting season when Harriet and M15 reunited renewing their bond to each other. Weekly Nest Notes: Timing and Teamwork

The chill in the air seemed to be welcomed by Harriet as she lay sleeping restfully with her head tucked under her wing. M15 took his place on the branch above keeping the overnight watch. Harriet and M15 work together as a finely tuned team toward their goal. They changed up their routine when M15 took a few hours of the night shift and Harriet flew off in a new direction on her early morning break.  At times the nest resembles a landing strip as one flies off on the… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: Timing and Teamwork

Harriet has laid eggs as early as the second week of November and as late as the end of December. A lot of signs may be pointing to earlier rather than later for egg laying. Their mating and bonding frequency has increased. They have both been diligently bringing large sticks for the rails. M15 shows his skills in flying at and grabbing just the right stick. Harriet is… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes- A Team on a Mission

Nature’s Magic- Weekly Nest Notes

Harriet greets the day with early morning vocals from her perch in the nest tree or one of the neighboring trees. M15 answers from one of his overnight perches. The song continues as they stretch, preen and survey the pasture. Usually one or both of them arrives in the nest to take stock of what materials are needed that day. M15 is sometimes more ambitious in the morning and starts his day with a nice stick delivery. Harriet observes and sometimes voices her approval of M15’s choice of material and… Read More »Nature’s Magic- Weekly Nest Notes
