Weekly Nest Notes: Exploration & Adventure

In the days since E10 and E11 embarked on their first flight, they have been out exploring their territory gaining confidence in their flying abilities and fulfilling their senses of adventure and curiosity.  They take off in a split second and fly skillfully and purposely, bounding from one place to another. They have watched Mom and Dad intently and have been off seeking out some of their favorite perch spots.   E10 and E11 seem as comfortable on the ground as they are in the air and perching in a tree.… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: Exploration & Adventure

Weekly Nest Notes: The Freedom of Flight

The week was filled with major milestones for E10 and E11.  They have been building strong wings and muscles preparing for their first flights.  They executed short flights from branch to branch gaining confidence and balance in their jaunts around the nest tree.  As they hovered higher and higher it was evident that they were ready to take the leap to their maiden voyages away from the security of the nest tree.  With great purpose and outstretched wings, E10 took flight from a lower branch on the nest tree, landing… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: The Freedom of Flight

Weekly Nest Notes: Higher & Higher!

The week was a very active one as we watched E10 and E11 continue building their confidence and strength, working out their spectacular wings in the wind and hovering higher and higher. They ventured out farther on the branches looking for new places to go.  E10 being more adventurous was first to make it to the veranda branch. E10 then executed a daring short flight up to the attic branch for the first time to take in a new perspective from a new branch. The trip back to the nest… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: Higher & Higher!

Weekly Nest Notes: Wings in the Wind

E10 and E11 frolicked in the warm breezy weather over the week and took every opportunity to use their majestic wings to catch the wind and lift themselves to higher heights.  Their daring high hops helped them move from the spike to the veranda and back to the nest smoothly and easily. They ventured out farther on the veranda branch and higher to the tip of the spike while flapping wildly in the wind. They launched to and perched on the veranda branch together. The next stop may be out… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: Wings in the Wind

Weekly Nest Notes: MILESTONE ALERT! The Eaglets have Branched!

Harriet and M15’s diligence in raising E10 and E11 have produced great rewards. These two active and healthy Eaglets have amassed a wealth of skills and behaviors and have surpassed many milestones over the last months. They have progressed through their “baby steps” and are now setting their sights on bigger goals. The closeness of their ages has seemed to allow them to experience everything at almost the same time. E11 was the first to mantle and grab a whole fish from Dad. E11 also was the first to figure… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: MILESTONE ALERT! The Eaglets have Branched!

Weekly Nest Notes: Standing Tall

E10 and E11 are accomplishing quite a list of milestones reached. Their strength and balance have multiplied and they are standing tall while walking around the nest. Their trips to the edge to watch the big wide world have drawn many gasps from onlookers.  Windy days allows the unfolding of mighty wings, feeling the lift from the air and performing small hops while “wingercizing”. Two healthy Eaglets with wings out and flapping leaves little room for much else.  E11 was first to self-feed with E10 quickly following suit. Both track… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: Standing Tall

Weekly Nest Notes: Family First!

The weeks seem to fly by so to speak as E10 and E11 gain height, weight, juvenile feathers, wingspan, appetites and the beginnings of engaging in Eagle behaviors. The distinguishing characteristics are so minimal that it is hard to tell one from the other at times. E10, as the first hatched seems to be slightly ahead of E11, standing for longer periods of time, walking across the nest and starting to use those big feet to hold onto items and tear them apart. E11 is on the same track. They… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: Family First!

Weekly Nest Notes: Feathers, Wings & More!

E10 and E11 are checking off more milestones in their young lives as they change seemingly minute by minute.   Their contour, wing and tail feathers are beginning to emerge and they spend a lot of time preening them. Remnants of light gray downy fluff gives them a comical appearance but it will be replaced with beautiful juvenile feathers.  Spectacular wings are unfolding and  E10 and E11 begin to get the feel of the breezes as they flap away. Balance and leg strength grows and they will soon be walking… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes: Feathers, Wings & More!

Weekly Nest Notes- “Here We Grow!”

E10 and E11 are growing at a rapid pace and if you blinked you missed something. Eagle chicks grow at a faster rate than any other bird in North America. At hatch E10 and E11 were approximately 3 inches tall and weigh about 2 ounces. By week 3 they are about 8-10 inches tall and weigh approximately 2.5 lbs. Harriet and M15 stuffed the growing babies to the brim with nutritious courses of fish, foul, mammals and a variety of unidentified food objects. Family meal time had Mom and Dad… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes- “Here We Grow!”

Weekly Nest Notes- Hatch Edition- The Continuing Journey

Late summer of 2017 began with preparations for the upcoming nesting season when Harriet and M15 reunited renewing their bond to each other. They surveyed the nest for soundness after it sat idle over the long hot summer months. Harriet made appearances to her nest and territory off and on throughout that time as she has over the last several years. They worked together in the early mornings adding sticks, branches, moss and grasses, readying the nest. M15 has become an exceptional nest builder as the nest rails grew higher… Read More »Weekly Nest Notes- Hatch Edition- The Continuing Journey
